Bloomfield 4-H Club honored for service

Gentry Mayor Wes Hogue, surrounded by members of the Bloomfield 4-H Club, signed a proclamation this afternoon, declaring it 4-H week in Gentry.

Gentry Mayor Wes Hogue recognized the hard work and dedication of the Bloomfield 4-H Club this afternoon by signing a proclamation declaring the week of Oct. 12 through Oct. 16 be designated 4-H week in the city.

Members of the Bloomfield 4-H Club watched as Hogue signed the proclamation.

The Bloomfield 4-H Club has more than 62 members and more than 14 adult volunteers, according to the proclamation.

The club recently showed projects at the Benton County Fair and some members have been showing at the Arkansas State Fair.

Miss Gentry Pageant Contestants

Ashley Beach, Sarah Earley, Jessica Jech, Samantha Morretti and Jessica James posed in casual wear before last night's Miss Gentry Pageant at Gentry High School.

The Miss Gentry Pageant was held Thursday night at Gentry High School with five contestants for the 2009 Miss Gentry title. Results and more photos will be in the May 27 issue of the Gentry Courier-Journal.

School board agenda for Monday

On the Gentry School Board’s agenda for its Monday night meeting are two bond restructuring proposals and the consideration of custodial services bids.

Proposals to restructure the school district’s bonded debt will be made by First Security and by Stephens, Inc.

Custodial service bids will also be opened at the meeting, with the possibility of replacing in-house custodial employees with a contracted service.

Other items on the agenda include financial reports for Period 9 of the school district’s fiscal year, the superintendent’s fiscal-distress report, a report on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the school calendar, substitute teacher pay, and Local Longevity Credit Intervals in the salary schedule.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the school district’s board room.

Freezing temperatures in the forecast again

Though windy, the sun is shining and temperatures are forecast in the 70s this afternoon. The possibility of isolated thunderstorms is in the forecast for tonight.

Tomorrow and Monday, however, are forecast to be much colder, with lows in the upper 20s Sunday night and in the mid to low 20s Monday night, meaning another threat of a damaging freeze for fruit trees, garden plants and other vegetation in the area. Forecast highs on Sunday are in the upper 40s, with a high of only near 40 on Monday.

Gradual warming is forecast, beginning on Tuesday, though another chance of frost remains on Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch which includes Gentry for both Sunday and Monday nights.
